Helping more families - Protecting more children Revolutionizing child welfare

One of the problems with child welfare systems today is that demand is so much greater than the systems can handle. Safe Families is the only child welfare organization effectively mobilizing whole communities to care for families and children in crisis.

How Safe Families for Children local communities care for families and children in crisis:

360 degree support

Safe Families for Children builds a 360-degree community of support for the family and the children at risk for abuse or maltreatment. This family of support includes host families, local churches, family coaches, family friends and resource friends. It is unlike anything our families in crisis have ever experienced and creates an environment for them to thrive and quickly move towards reunification.

Host FamiliesVolunteer families screened and certified by licensed clinicians agree to house and care for children to help the family in crisis.

Referring Organizations and circle of support

How donor support directly impacts Safe Families for Children’s ability to be effective in every community.

Referral Partners

  • Developing and managing referral partnerships with vital community members in touch with families in crisis: Government agencies, justice and law enforcement, schools, churches and medical facilities.
  • Equipping referral partners with processes and materials needed to effectively refer families in crisis
  • Building and employing recruiting tools vital to the local response community (media, networking, promotions)
  • Public relations and social media specifically for referral sources and community partners
  • Implementing working procedures and reporting in compliance with each community network’s unique requirements (insuring SFFC meets all requirements specific to the local area in addition to federal/state requirements)

Families in crisis

  • Direct outreach to families in need or potential crisis so they know Safe Families for Children is an option in their area
  • Posters and flyers in community service areas frequented by families in crisis
  • Staff working with referral sources, meeting with families, screening the needs, taking up cases not appropriate or severe enough for government intervention.

Volunteer equipping

  • Robust training tools for volunteers and churches – ensuring each family gets the best care possible and volunteers are well equipped to handle even the toughest of circumstances.
  • Community development and support tools (web based) insuring that no church, volunteer or support staff feel “alone” in their effort – this is mobilizing a community around the family as well as volunteers, churches and child-welfare agencies.
  • Outcomes-based data management and reporting
  • Registration and maintenance of safety files.

Reach, build and maintain church networks

  • Train church workers and volunteers in person and on the web
  • Provide safety screening as required by law for hosting families
  • Build community between churches in the local area
  • Supply churches with materials (posters, recruiting and training materials, videos, social media support, etc.)
